Disable The Notification Area Balloon Tips in Windows XP/2003

Many XP users who have disabled the automatic update in Windows XP/2003 are annoyed by a little balloon tips that appear every time you turn on your computer.
Here’s a little tip that I have found on the web to totally disable any Windows XP/2003 balloon tips.
1) Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
2) Navigate to the following subkey:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3) Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
4) Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.
5) Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.
Note : To enable again the balloon tips change hexadecimal value to 1

Taking ScreenShot in Windows

Here are some of my favorite screenshot tips that I have discovered for Microsoft Windows. Enjoy!
1. Take a screenshot
It couldn’t be easier: just press the Print Screen key on your keyboard (sometimes abbreviated to Prnt Scrn) and the contents of the screen are copied to the clipboard. You can then paste the screenshot into Paint, Microsoft Word, or another program.
If you just want to copy the contents of the currently selected window, hold down the Alt key while you press the Print Screen key.
2. Grayscale anything (Windows XP only)
Here’s a sneaky trick: You can easily turn any part of the screen into a grayscale version. First, make sure the part you want to capture is not in the center of the screen. The click the Start button and click Log Off.
As you probably know, after the Log Off dialog appears the screen will slowly fade from color to grayscale. But if you use the screenshot tip mentioned above, you are able to use that XP “eye candy” to take a screenshot of the now-grayscale screen.
3. Overcome screen-capture prevention
If you use tip #1, you may come across programs that prevent you from taking screenshots. If you’re sure that it’s legal to take the screenshot you want to take, you might be able to overcome this by first holding down the Ctrl key and tapping Esc twice. Then press Print Screen. Note that it will not work to tap the Windows key twice.

Some More Windows Shortcut's

Press Win+L to switch to the Welcome screen.
Press Win+L to lock your workstation.
You can switch users without going through the Welcome screen: From Task Manager, go to the Users tab, right-click a user, and select Connect.
Hold down the shift key in the shutdown dialog to change “Stand By” to “Hibernate”. Or just press H to hibernate instantly. You can even use the Power Control Panel to configure your power button to hibernate.
To disable the password when resuming from standby or hibernation, open the Power Control Panel and uncheck “Prompt for password after returning from standby” on the Advanced tab.
You can rename multiple files all at once: Select a group of files, right-click the first file, and select “Rename”. Type in a name for the first file, and the rest will follow.
Hold down the shift key when switching to thumbnail view to hide the file names. Do it again to bring them back.
When dragging a file in Explorer, you can control the operation that will be performed when you release the mouse button:
Hold the Control key to force a Copy.
Hold the Shift key to force a Move.
Hold the Alt key to force a Create Shortcut.
If you create a file called Folder.jpg, that image will be used as the thumbnail for the folder. What’s more, that image will also be used as the album art in Windows Media Player for all media files in that folder. From the View Menu, select “Choose Details” to select which file properties should be shown in the Explorer window. To sort by a file property, check its name in the “Choose Details” in order to make that property available in the “Arrange Icons by” menu.
To display the volume control icon in the taskbar, go to the Sounds and Audio Devices Control Panel and select “Place volume icon in the taskbar”.
Hold down the shift key when deleting a file to delete it immediately instead of placing it in the Recycle Bin. Files deleted in this way cannot be restored.
If you hold down the shift key while clicking “No” in a Confirm File Operation dialog, the response will be interpreted as “No to All”.
To save a document with an extension other than the one a program wants to use, enclose the entire name in quotation marks. For example, if you run Notepad and save a file under the name Dr.Z it will actually be saved under the name Dr.Z.txt. But if you type “Dr.Z” then the document will be saved under the name Dr.Z. Note that a document so-named cannot be opened via double-clicking since the extension is no longer “.txt”.
Put a shortcut to your favorite editor in your Send To folder and it will appear in your “Send To” menu. You can then right-click any file and send it to your editor.
Ctrl+Shift+Escape will launch Task Manager.
To arrange two windows side-by-side, switch to the first window, then hold the Control key while right-clicking the taskbar button of the second window. Select “Tile Vertically”.
To close several windows at once, hold down the Control key while clicking on the taskbar buttons of each window. Once you have selected all the windows you want to close, right-click the last button you selected and pick “Close Group”.——-You can turn a folder into a desktop toolbar by dragging the icon of the desired folder to the edge of the screen. You can then turn it into a floating toolbar by dragging it from the edge of the screen into the middle of the screen. (It helps if you minimize all application windows first.)
You can turn a folder into a taskbar toolbar.
First, unlock your taskbar.
Next, drag the icon of the desired folder to the space between the taskbar buttons and the clock. (Wait for the no-entry cursor to change to an arrow. It’s a very tiny space; you will have to hunt for it.)
You can rearrange and resize the taskbar toolbar you just created.
You can even turn the taskbar toolbar into a menu by resizing it until only its name is visible. In the Address Bar, type “microsoft” and hit Ctrl+Enter. Internet Explorer automatically inserts the “http://www/.” and “.com” for you.
To remove an AutoComplete entry from a Web form, highlight the item in the AutoComplete dropdown and press the Delete key.
To remove all Web form AutoComplete entries, go to the Internet Explorer Tools menu, select Internet Options, Content, AutoComplete, then press the “Clear Forms” button.
To organize your Favorites in Explorer instead of using the Organize Favorites dialog, hold the shift key while selecting “Organize Favorites” from the Favorites menu of an Explorer window.
You can organize your Favorites by dragging the items around your Favorites menu.
Alternatively, you can open the Favorites pane and hold the Alt key while pressing the up and down arrows to change the order of your Favorites.
To run Internet Explorer fullscreen, press F11. Do it again to return to normal mode.
If your “Printers and Faxes” folder is empty, you can hide the “Printers and Faxes” icon when viewed from other computers by stopping the Print Spooler service.
To add or remove columns from Details mode, select Choose Details from the View menu, or just right-click the column header bar.
In Internet Explorer, hold the Shift key while turning the mouse wheel to go forwards or backwards.
In Internet Explorer, hold the Shift key while clicking on a link to open the Web page in a new window.
In Internet Explorer, type Ctrl+D to add the current page to your Favorites.
This and many more keyboard shortcuts can be found by going to Internet Explorer, clicking the Help menu, then selecting Contents and Index. From the table of contents, open Accessibility and click “Using Internet Explorer keyboard shortcuts”.In some applications (such as Internet Explorer), holding the Control key while turning the mouse wheel will change the font size.
To shut down via Remote Desktop, click the Start button, then type Alt+F4. Copyright @ Microsoft

Changing Drive Letters in Windows 2000 & XP

1)Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2)Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the right pane, you’ll see your drives listed. CD-ROM drives are listed at the bottom of the pane.
3)Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
4)Click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the drive letter you want to assign, and then click OK.
You will not be able to change the boot or system drive letter in this manner. Many MS-DOS-based and Windows-based programs make references to a specific drive letter (for example, environment variables). If you modify the drive letter, these programs may not function correctly.

How to add a Command Prompt option to the default Explorer right click context menu?

If you find that you frequently open a Command Prompt window and change to a specific directory, you can add the Command Prompt to your shortcut menu. This option enables you to right-click on a folder within Windows Explorer and choose the Command Prompt - which opens a Command Prompt window with that folder as your active directory. To add the Command Prompt option to the default right click context menu in Windows Explorer you can do one of the following:
Method #1: Manually add the context menu1. In explorer, open Tools, Folder Options.2. Select the File Types tab.3. For Windows XP: Go to NONE / Folder.4. For Windows 2000: Press n to scroll to the N/A section.5. For Windows NT/98/95: Press f to scroll to the Folders section.6. Select the entry labeled Folder7. For Windows 2000/XP: Press Advanced button.8. For Windows NT/98/95: Press Edit button.9. Select New10. In the action block type "Command Prompt" without the quotes.11. In the app block type "cmd.exe" without the quotes.12. Save and exit Folder Options. Now right click on Start, you should have a new drop down option. Open explorer and right click on a folder, select Command Prompt and a command window opens in that folder.
Method #2: Through batch file1. Begin by creating a batch file. For example, you could create a batch file named StartPrompt.cmd. Add the following commands to your batch file: @echo offcd /d %1Title %~f12. Save this batch file to your Windows NT/2000/XP root directory (which is usually C:\WINNT or C:\WINDOWS for XP).3. Open Windows Explorer.4. Choose View Options to display the Options dialog box.5. Select the File Types tab.6. In the list of Registered File Types, select Folder then click Edit.7. Click New to display the New Action dialog box.8. In the Action text box, type Command Prompt.9. In the Application Used To Perform Action text box, type: cmd.exe /a /k c:\winnt\StartPrompt "%l"10. Click OK to close the New Action dialog box, then click Close twice.Open Windows NT Explorer, then right-click on a folder. You should now see a new option called "Command Prompt" on the shortcut menu. If you choose this option, Windows Explorer opens a new Command Prompt window with the selected directory as your current directory.
Method #3: Through the Registry1. Navigate in your Registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Classes/Folder/Shell and create a key called "Command Prompt" without the quotes.2. Set the default string to whatever text you want to appear in the right-click menu.3. Create a new key within your newly created command prompt named "command," and set the default string to Cmd.exe /k pushd %LYou may need to add %SystemRoot%/ before the Cmd.exe if the executable can't be found.4. The changes should take place immediately. Right click a folder and your new menu item should appear.Note: You can do the same for Windows 98. Type in "c:\windows\command.com /k pushd %L" (without the quotes).

Maintenance Wizard to accomplish various useful tasks while your computer is idle.

This will make your computer little fast.

You might want to reschedule most of the tasks to take place once a month, like scandisk, defragment, etc., then remind yourself to leave the computer ON that night only so Task Scheduler can accomplish Tasks while your PC is idle.

1. Click the Start button and choose Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Maintenance Wizard.

2. Click Custom Mode-to set Maintenance Setting your self, click Next, and select a time when you want to perform the Maintenance wizard to operate choose night.

3. Click Next wizard will show you how you can start window quickly (this will be shown only if any items is there in StartUp folder) uncheck the item you don’t want windows to start automatically at startup or delete it from StartUp folder located in start menu > programs >Startup.

4. Click Next now wizard will ask you to add Defragment in schedule, Defragment will speed up your programs by arranging files which are spread all over Hard disk. Click Reschedule to change time of defragment.

5. Click Next now wizard will ask you to add Scan Disk in schedule, Scan Disk will check for errors in the hard disk. Click Reschedule to change time of Scan Disk. Click on Setting to change Type of scan i.e., Standard or Thorough. Standard will only scan folder and files for errors but will Thorough scan Standard scan and surface scan of the hard disk to see for any errors in the hard disk. I say you choose Thorough scan and also click on Automatically fix errors then press OK.

6. Click Next now wizard will ask you to add Disk Cleanup in schedule, Disk Cleanup will clear all temporary files, recycle files etc. click on setting and check all files and then click OK.

7. Click Next now click on When I Finish, perform each scheduled task for the first time if you want to perform Maintenance Wizard to run now and then click Finish.

OK you've set up your Maintenance Wizard to perform these tasks on one day of the month, be sure that there are no conflicts between the Disk Defragmenter and your power management, screen savers, or any other applications i.e., turn off screen savers and change power management to Always ON.
Be careful not to run intensive disk activities too often. Computer technicians recommend that you don't schedule a thorough scan of your hard disk every night, for example. This can wear out a hard drive more quickly than normal usage will. If you scan once a month that should take care of most problems that might arise.
